When the North Carolina House Budget proposal was originally released, many lawmakers claimed the “draconian” and “painful” cuts were unavoidable without tax increases.
Among the proposed cuts were teacher positions, care for the elderly and developmentally disabled. A closer examination of budgetary items not on the chopping block calls the House leadership’s priorities and motives into question.
House budget writers insist that it is their deep concern about “restoring” funding for education and those in need motivating their massive job-killing tax increase. But if they are indeed so concerned about such programs, why were they so quick to cut teachers and aid to those in need in their budget proposal, but left substantial funding for much more questionable items intact?
Following is a list of funding for programs that House budget writers chose not to subject to cuts. A cursory review of this untouched funding prompts the question: Does House leadership really thinks these items are more important to fund than teacher and disabled children, or was there some political gamesmanship involved in their original budget plan?
MORE IMPORTANT THAN TEACHERS AND DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED CHILDREN?
