A mother in Hoke County complains her daughter was forced to eat a school lunch because a government inspector determined her home-made lunch did not meet nutrition requirements. In fact, all of the students in the NC Pre-K program classroom at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford had to accept a school lunch in addition to their lunches brought from home.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says there was no state official at the school that day.
NC Pre-K (before this year known as More at Four) is a state-funded education program designed to “enhance school readiness” for four year-olds.
The mother, who doesn’t wish to be identified at this time, says she made her daughter a lunch that contained a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips. A state inspector assessing the pre-K program at the school said the girl also needed a vegetable, so the inspector ordered a full school lunch tray for her. While the four-year-old was still allowed to eat her home lunch, the girl was forced to take a helping of chicken nuggets, milk, a fruit and a vegetable to supplement her sack lunch.
The mother says the girl was so intimidated by the inspection process that she was too scared to eat all of her homemade lunch. The girl ate only the chicken nuggets provided to her by the school, so she still didn’t eat a vegetable.
The mother says her daughter doesn’t like vegetables and – like most four year olds – will only eat them at home under close supervision.
In an interview with the Civitas Institute the mother said “I can’t put vegetables in her lunchbox. I’m not a millionaire and I’m not going to put something in there that my daughter doesn’t eat and I’ve done gone round and round with the teacher about that and I’ve told her that. I put fruit in there every day because she is a fruit eater. Vegetables, let me take care of my business at home and at night and that’s when I see she’s eating vegetables. I either have to smash it or tell her if you don’t eat your vegetables you’re going to go to bed.”
The mother added, “It’s just a headache to keep arguing and fighting. I’ve even wrote a note to her teachers and said do not give my daughter anything else unless it comes out of her lunchbox and they are still going against me and putting a milk in front of her every day.
“Friday she came home and said ‘Mom, they give me vegetable soup and a milk,'” said the mother.
“So I went to the cafeteria to make sure she had no fee and it’s not being charged to her account yet,” she continued, ” but what concerned me was that I got a letter from the principal and it says students who do not bring a healthy lunch will be offered the missing portions which may result in a fee from the cafeteria. So if I don’t stay on top of her account on a weekly basis there’s that opportunity that charges could be put on her account and then if I let it go too far then it’s like I’m going to have a big battle.”
The principal of West Hoke Elementary, Jackie Samuels, says none of the children’s parents were asked to pay for the school food. While the parents may not have to pay, it was still an expense for the school to provide the extra food. A phone call to the Hoke County Schools Superintendent to inquire as to how much additional expense this would impose on the school was not returned.
The mother, who lives in Fayetteville, sent a statement to state Rep. G.L. Pridgen (R-Robeson) detailing her complaint. Pridgen says he was shocked to hear it. Pridgen has since learned this is a nationwide practice based on federal guidelines.
An assistant to Pridgen says the girl’s grandmother was also upset and asked, “This isn’t China, is it?”
The nutrition standards for pre-K lunch require milk, two servings of fruit or vegetable, bread or grains and a meat or meat alternative. The school didn’t receive a high grade from the January assessment because the home-made lunches didn’t meet those guidelines. The mother points out the only thing on that list her daughter’s home lunch didn’t have was milk, so she doesn’t understand why the girl was given a complete school meal as a supplement.
The mother says her next step is to sit down with the principal and if nothing is done then she plans to go to the school board.
I need to pinch myself and wake up- so I can remember what country I live in! This is goes way beyond school function. Obviously the point of the state inspection is to make sure all the nutritional supplements are included in the lunch not that it all has to be eaten as evidenced by the child only eating 3 nuggets.

Look at your household budget and find things you can live with out, such as cable, get a prepaid cell, cut coupons etc. Then pull your kid out and send them to a Christian/Catholic/private school. I was linked here via Drudge Report which had a huge headline almost seeming to suggest that the government was banning children homemade lunches in school. Well, that wasn’t the case at all.
It sounds to me like there happened to be an inspector at the school who was trying to make sure every child’s lunch met certain nutritional criteria. When he saw that this kid didn’t have a vegetable, he gave her a school lunch that included a vegetable. No one took this child’s homemade lunch away or told her she couldn’t eat it. No one forced the child to eat anything from the school. Basically, someone gave her a vegetable.
Come on people. There are real and actual issues to be outraged over. When we start whining over every minor tempest in a teapot, it takes away from actual issues of real importance. There are worse things in the world than giving a child a serving of vegetables to eat if she chooses to.

This is really too much. No veggie so the child was given chicken nuggets? I would not eat veggies as a child either, still really don’t like them too much as an adult. My mom sent me peanut butter and jelly or baloney and cheese sandwiches, a carrot or celery, and chips. I would eat from the lunch line if she was too busy to make me lunch and also almost everyday bought milk and a roll. My Mother was an elementary school teacher. I turned out fine. Most good parents are actually upset with what the kids get in school and at fast food restaurants such as McDs happy meals. I was talking to a couple of school teachers last month who stated that the free subsidized meal the kids received at school were the most nutritious they had all day. But the problem is it is my money feeding your kids so send them peanut butter and a carrot, make your own choices, and take responsibility for feeding your own children. Please someone, get the government out of our lives. My parents were pretty strong republicans but I vote libertarian.

Actually that lunch from home was terrible. The bread, cheese, and lunch meat are all likely high in sodium. Potato chips are also likely high in sodium and fats (depending on the oil used). If the mother wanted to send a “healthy” lunch from home she would have substituted some slices of chicken (baked at home), carrot sticks or celery sticks, a banana, and some pre-packaged apple slices (instead of the apple juice). Bad parenting is to blame for the problem. If parents sent a lunch from home that actually was healthy, you would have grounds to object to the overly intrusive federal inspector. Here is seems as if the parent is the one in need of a bit of schooling about how to pack a nutritious school lunch. Packing potato chips and calling that a vegetable is asking for trouble.
This is what you get when you are enrolled in a goverment program. If you don’t want big brother to tell you what you can and can’t do get out of the program. I’m not saying that I like the state that our country is. It does sound like the food police went a bit crazy that day.

This is amazing. Government control is an outrage and particularly when it interferes with living out your personal beliefs. Food is a very personal matter. What if my idea of “good nutrition” for my children is not the same as the governments!? I’ve seen those chicken nuggets and wouldn’t feed that Tyson-grown, antibiotic-filled, diseased meat to my child under any circumstances. Always remember this. ALL! school lunch programs are simply a way to force local governments to fund union jobs. We’re still hearing about the infamous ‘ketchup packs’ in the Reagan era. If you could wave a magic wand and make all school lunch programs run by private contractors the dems would drop it in a heart beat. This is about, and it is ONLY about, government strong arming local governments to hire more union employees, who then get their wages garnished and donated to the dems. School lunches are a type of kick back.
The child had everything she needed in her lunch according to the nutrition standards for pre-k lunch. I know where we live there are no standards for a home-packed lunch. Kids can bring anything they want in their lunch boxes. As a teacher and a mom, I know it doesn’t matter what regulators enforce at school, most of the kids are going to go home and eat junk. I also know that school lunches have not improved over the years! They still taste bad!
Get rid of public (government) schools and you won’t have this problem.
This is only one of the reasons I plan on homeschooling my kids. Sorry, no way are you going to treat my precious children like prisoners of war/cattle/whatever you want to call them.

Kids don’t need a pre-K program–you can and should teach them the basics at home. It’s not about vegetables. Since the School Lunch Guidelines consider Ketchup and “greasy French Fries” a vegetable all she would have to do is give her some ketchup. This is also not about health and nutrition since french fries is one of the worst foods containing artery clogging fat. A plain potato would be better. This is about subsidized Agra Business especially Meat and Dairy. Especially Dairy is losing market to alternatives like Almond and Soy Milk. Dairy does not want to compete on the basis of demand, when the demand for Milk goes down they want to be subsidized and use the government i.e. School Lunch Program to unload all that milk and dairy nobody wants to buy. This also keeps prices high. They are overproducing. That is what this is about. This is not new and has also been supported and advanced by Republicans and Democrats alike! Those that argue for fair market competition based on consumer demand should be spear heading the end of agra business subsidies!

Make people who choose not to work eat only the basics. No more Doritos and Mountain Dew. The incentive should be to get off food stamps, not to scam the system to earn more. As far as what this mother should do?
In my opinion she should stand up to the school. The diet of a child is the parents’ decision, ultimately. I think she should make it clear with the daughter and the school that the lunch she makes for the child is the lunch the child will eat. Furthermore, the FDA has recognized french fries and pizza(!) as a vegetable. If fries are a veggie then how are chips not considered a veggie? I’m just sayin’…. Fried GMO taters are fried GMO taters whether you call them fries or chips. Goose and gander and all that stuff…
I also think the mother should “drop in” to eat lunch with her daughter randomly and as often as possible to keep the school “honest” and “on its toes”. In addition, I think that the mother should take the time to contact the ever-crooked Bev, the LG, and the AG.
I live in NC and I will be contacting all the State and NC Federal elected people I feel appropriate as a registered voter and including this article to express my displeasure.

I was in San Francisco (ground zero for the American socialist nanny state) in 2010 competing in a triathlon, and the night before I walked along fisherman’s wharf watching the street artists with their spray cans doing some really cool freehand paintings. Once this one artist was done he gave the painting to his assistant who was the ‘barker’ who tried to sell it to us tourists as we looked on. The barker was openly smoking weed. After NC Governor Punkin realized that she didn’t stand a chance of being re-elected even with her bought and paid for educator votes, she is spending her remaining days trying to pay them back by traveling the state trying to shame the legislature into spending more on our bloated, corrupt educational system in NC. Someone needs to investigate this further – as it looks like a hoax. If you google Hoke County School District, you can look and see the lunch menu for elementary schools for the whole month (on the school district’s website). As of the 14th of February, chicken nuggets haven’t even been on the schedule…. (not until later this week in fact). Something seems wrong with the story. (unless this all took place last month or something….)

This is directly caused by Mrs. Obama. My kids drink so much milk at home that it costs me a fortune. I send them a bottle of water and a juice bag for lunch. Two things disturb me here. Greatest of all, of course, is that the school is now becoming the nutrition police and insisting children be handed additional food if the meal from home was not judged sufficient.
But it is also telling that the government inspector was just plain wrong, and the meal forced upon the child was WORSE than what she got from home. OK, so apples and bananas are not vegetables, but they are far superior to chicken nuggets and “count” toward the FDA recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.
This is the problem with government. They impose unnecessary rules and enforce them through stupid people. TSA anyone? Yes, this IS reason for outrage. Just another reason I’m glad I home schooled my kids.

Sooooo, tell me, is both parents working 24/7 instead of one of the parents homeschooling worth it to give your kids a real lousy education, one that they MAY get a job in some fast food restaurant when they graduate? Or is it worth it to spend thousands on cell phones, hi-tech televisions, laptops, ipods, computers, that oh so cute expensive, keep-up-with-the-jone’s sports car, those diamond earrings and that elegant pearl neckless, more important than putting your kid in private school instead of having them indoctrinated into some mindless life that government obviously has planned for them? Really? Get real people. I put my daughter through private school with no help at all. I sacrificed anything and everything I could. She is a scientist now, and an excellent one. My son is being home schooled since his father died when he was 9 years old. It got too expensive and I couldn’t eat any less food than I already was. So, I am homeschooling. We tried public schools but he was disgusted with the system, a bunch of teachers that were too busy ‘testing’ kids, to get around to teaching them. And yes, my son wants everyone to know, those chicken nuggets are scary stuff. They really do not have quality food at these public schools and you just have to be worried about food poisoning and recalls. Just say no to public. Yea, I know, the state is supposed to give your kids free schooling. But Obama is making it federal now, so cower down and teach your kids to cower down as well, or make alternative choices while you still can. I am so glad my kids are grown. My daughter has decided until this country becomes free again, she will not be considering having children, because she thinks it is wrong to bring children into a country that is in bondage.

First off, how in the world does the government determine the nutritional needs of a child based on one meal a day?
Secondly, it is the principle of the thing to refuse to put a vegetable in the lunch (however, I’d be tempted to put one carrot stick or celery stick (small) just to be irritating (and to see if they would actually accept that)!
The answer though is not private schools–not everyone can afford them. I did not send my children to private school and they have still turned out fine. However, we were on top of what was going on. The answer is (as someone pointed out earlier) for parents to stand up en masse and protest such silliness! I can think of some ways to save a lot of money by eliminating unnecessary personnel from a school (or assigning them to actually teach a class!

This is NOT nationwide. When I saw this story I asked not only my own kids (in case I missed a note)but my 15 nieces and nephews, 12 of who confirm they bring lunch- 3 get free lunch. They live in 7 states and I talked to them personally or an older sibling and no one else is doing this- not in Massachusetts, Missouri, Iowa, Louisiana, Texas, California or Illinois. They are all in 2-9th grade. You know this is an isolated incident or parents would be freaking out.

These are not SCHOOLS. These are day care centers and the rules are written because there was massive, and i mean MASSIVE abuse. The pre-k centers would get free/reduced lunch program money and they would give a kid hot dog and bread or the cheap mac and cheese in a box. That’s it. They would pocket the rest as profit.
So there is now a law in most states that day care centers and that includes pre-k education centers HAVE to offer a lunch that is considered nutritious.
There are guidelines that must be followed, limited sodium, limited fat, they don’t get vitamin D milk, they get 1% over the age of 2. They have to offer a vegetable, fruit etc.
If a kid brings a lunch, it has to meet the same requirement, this is because parents were sending their kids to school with twinkies for lunch. We are talking about 3 and 4 year olds here.
The school is sticking to the letter of the law- obviously when the laws were made they did not intend for a parent who sends a real lunch to get penalized but that’s what happens when you have idiots who think they can send a bag of doritos and call it lunch.
Pull your kids out of school, folks. Home schooling is the only way to Ho if you value your parental influence over your kids.

If Mom wants her child in this school, she could bake chocolate cupcakes and add pureed vegetables to them. I did this when my boys were younger. They loved the cupcakes, and never knew they ate vegetables. However, how to convince the school there are vegs in the cupcakes may be another dilemma. Good luck.
I homeschool my son, for this very reason. My son is on a strict diet, due to allergies. I am still looking at a possibly even making more changes as he gets older, depending how the diet affects his behavior. My son has Sensory Processing Disorder and is allergic to artificial colors/food dyes. My son prefers veggies, but doesn’t like fruits, since they irritate his stomach.
Two options. Claim the child is on a special diet due to
1 Health reasons like allergies. Claim her records are protected by HIPPA
2. Or religious reasons.
Need to threaten with legal actions to scare them. Focus on the teacher and administration.

NY is poised to lose a half billion dollars in federal money, because the educators/teachers refuse to be evaluated by Obama’s new standards, because 2 years was not enough time to put the plan in place. The teachers union exists not to educate students, they are there to protect useless teachers, who have no business in a classroom. Obviously the state run school system does not feel the need to be answerable to the parents (taxpayers). I suggest that everyone either get their lawmakers to institute a voucher program or abolish the state system and use your saved tax dollars to send your children to private schools.
I’m a doctor and I don’t agree with the fda USDA guidelines. It is completely political. A parent should have the right to choose what foods their children eats. If they’re starving their children, then the lunch police can get involved. If a family abstractions from meat or dairy, that idea their decision. I’m sad to see where this country is going.
I would have a fit if anyone fed my children chicken nuggets. School lunch nutritionist are so off base in eating healthy it can only be described as a joke. Break down the nutritional value of chicken nuggets, greasy old bread crumbs covering all the parts of a chicken people wouldn’t pay for. Vegetables in a school lunch program are “Ketsup”. So the Mom didn’t put carrots in the lunch. Really? It’s no wonder this country has so much obesity. Did the school really do the right thing, I say they are undermining the family and promoting a McDonalds diet. Is McDonalds the sponcer of this program? I am truely disgusted.

And as somebody already pointed out a packet of catsup, a veggie according to federal guidelines, is FREE! My intent was to suggest that this mom attempt to solve her problem by other more peaceful, practical and resourceful means that won’t distract her from caring for her child. No child deserves to have her mom serving time in jail just to make a point.
Of course the socialist food cops are going to start with the little ones, they can’t fight back. But don’t be surprised if one day these government “inspectors” are waiting in your supermarket checkout lane or standing by as you order in a restaurant to ensure you get what they term “proper nutrition.” This is a very scary development and Americans EVERYWHERE ought to be outraged!

If you cannot afford food, isn’t low-cost to no-cost lunches available? It used to be that a lot of homemade lunches were not even close to food kids should have. The USDA and said inspectors were put in place to ensure proper dietary meals were available because poor or lazy or ignorant parents tried passing twinkees off as food. I saw first hand what some of these kids came to school with and if you think it was pretty . . . think again – molded dried up bread, rotten fruit etc etc. But this partisan bickering makes me sick to death. As does over zealous inspectors and school officials. But so does parents giving kids pop-tarts for breakfast or worse. Some of these parents are worse than kids getting good food into their bodies. You are what you eat and not not all parents can afford good food, some wouldn’t know good from bad and some just don’t care. Go visit your kid’s lunch program and see for yourself . . . then complain. Until then your so-called opinion is worth about that much.
A picture of a gun or a teeny-tiny toy gun counts as a ‘gun’ by these bureaucrats, right? So a picture or a plastic veggie should also count. Right? Problem solved! This is what happens when tiny minds are given authority. Take them to court for big $$$ and/or huge headline apologies (including pix of the perps) in the papers, for their arrogance & stupidity. I live in the area and I am not at all surprised. They are so worried about petty things like this and not enough about their curriculum. Homeschooling is very popular in NC for a reason!
Nutrition wise, fruits and vegetables are pretty interchangeable. If a young child will eat fruit instead of vegetables, what is the problem? Also, this was one meal. The school officials don’t know what this child had for breakfast or will have for dinner. If your schools are anything like California”s the teachers and administration would do better for the children if they would teach them and keep them safe.

One of our kids started med school in the fall here in the US. A very good school. Only about a 1/4 of the class is from the US, the rest from other countries. I asked one of the directors at the open house about the composition of the class, she said they take the most qualified, and this was how it turned out. Isn’t it nice to know the teachers we pay to teach our children, are now spending more time counseling, feeding, and doing about everything else, except teaching. North Carolina has a huge number of people who home school……I can see why!

To begin with, you are not really supposed to drink cow’s milk after you have been weaned – see what Dr. Leila Denmark did in Atlanta for thousands of Children. that is, if you want to stay at the top of health. She just turned 114 years old Feb. 1st and practiced medicine till she was 107.
Also – something strange has happened to chicken in the US, since about 2005. My father in Atlanta, myself in San Francisco and my sister in Iowa – we all had strange symptoms. He died before we figured it out. Last year, I ate only chicken for a week, not fried, baked, and wound up gaining weight. Something was wrong.
So I stopped eating chicken, my main staple.
Within a half a day, I lost 11 pounds. It stayed off. Then two weeks later, I ate some more chicken, and was drinking water like crazy and gained 10 pounds within hours.
There is something wrong with the chicken in this country. Obesity is a factor of something in their food supply, I will bet, that is affecting all of us.
Also, in prepared foods, there is a lot of Sodium Benzoate, that makes my ankles blow up.
So my sister in Iowa had an allergy test done. Our mother is celiac, but it turns out my sister is not. She like the rest of us is lactose-intolerant, and guess what?
She’s allergic to chicken and eggs, like I discovered on my own – and 50 other foods.
What is in our food supply causing this? I wonder if it’s not some chemical, maybe one made in China and shipped here, as we know a lot of heavy metals cover all kinds of materials that come in here – I have had a lot of experience with this…
So this so-called food police is a (maybe planned? hmmm…) reaction to something else we need to be investigating.
People I know from other countries, remote areas, go home for a month and come back with their bodies much slimmer, and then they start eating the same foods here – and wala – they blow up.
This is crazy. Someone please find out what’s been put in our food supply and stop that first – and stay away from this communist bull that is all Obama and Pelosi and more…we have been had!

When kids are fed, they think better in the class room, because they are not thinking of when lunch is coming. The child should have a choice of choosing what they want to eat and not be forced to eat the school lunch. If there was a buffet of milk, vegetables, and a meat to choose from, then that would be ok by me. The lunch monitor should be told to keep their hands out of my kids lunch!

This so-called nutrition expert needs to be committed to a mental institution and have a full battery of psychological tests administered to discover why this individual feels the need to inflict psychological stress and abuse upon children. The person or people that hired this individual need to be placed on administrative leave while they are evaluated for their judgment in allowing an incompetent and psychologically damaging individual to be in the proximity of children in an educational setting. Then the School District needs to be sued.

What about people with food allergies or special food needs? There are a lot of kids who have specific dietary needs and this forceful feeding being done by the schools could end up making a kid really sick. Parents should know what foods their kids can have and need and it should be the responsibility of the PARENTS, not of the GOVERNMENT, to ensure this happens.

Young girls between the ages of 12-16 can get an abortion or surgically implanted birth control without the parents consent or even knowledge in some states (boy, they care so much for our children that they kill their children) and the greatest thing about it is that they tax you to fund it all! Everything starts with an “isolated incident.” There is a government inspector on the premises inspecting the lunches made by parents. They are not only inspecting, they are now involved in parenting.
It is highly unlikely to be an “isolated incident”, unless you think the government only hired and trained one inspector.

I’m curious what kind of “vegetable” they put in front of this little girl. My wife taught in Califonia for several years and as a Chef myself, I found it discusting that her school and all of LAUSD considered “tater tots” a vegetable. What is this country coming to when the liberals, who always seem to know better than the rest of us, are left alone to warp the health and minds of all our kids.

In the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), they are proud to announce that there is over an 85% participation in their free school breakfast lunch and dinner program. The schools are literally falling apart, educational materials are 10 to 20 (or more) years old, and the list goes on, but there is plenty of free money for food that is left, largely uneaten and other new programs, such as mandatory classes for K-12 students in “Gay Studies.” Yes, the State of California is fiscally broke.
Is there a wonder why more students are being placed in private educational institutions, vice public schools, by responsible parents? oh yes, these are the parents the Obama Administration keeps attacking because they use their disposible income on their youngster(s) and not some derelict to reside government housing or receive welfare.
This is getting out of control. Big brother is watching is no longer just PARANOIA. As Americans when are we going to say enough is enough. It’s not food that is making us fat it’s a lack of exercising and movement. With the advancments in technologies kids play too many video and computer games and thats whats leading to unhealthy children and fat Americans.

Ok, seriously? To start school lunches are not even close to healthy! They buy the cheepest crap they can get away with, and serve it to our children touting the “health” factor that doesnt really exist, seeing that it is all processed and filled with preservatives and biproducts of hormone and steroid fed livestock! Their dairy choices are often chocolate or strawberry milk which has more sugar than a can of soda.
My solution, for those who can work a swing or graveyard shift (which is what I do, fulltime). Find out about the K12 homeschool program in your state. It is an online public school. The lessons are provided and most of the school supplies needed through out the year are provided, even a computer if you dont have one. Your student will have an online teacher, and you simply act as their learning coach. and they only have to attend school 6 hours a day or less for younger k-2 students. Not to mention they provide more support than a brick and mortar school does on your students individual learning plan (IEP). and they have monthly activities and field trips, that are most of the time free of charge.
BOYCOTT!! KEEP CHILDREN HOME UNTIL THIS SOCIALISM AND FACISM IS CHANGED.
Remember, it’s only treason if you advocate the overthrow of the government by force or violence.

this is about money more than anything else. A lot of schools now provide only a cheese sandwich if a child is behind on their lunch payments. The schools are not too concerned about your child’s eating habits if you owe them money. Simply tell your child to eat the lunch you send for him or her and if the school adds more to it then eat it if you want or do not if you do not want to. The school will not care so long as they can serve you enough food to count your child as a student eating a full meal so that they may count your child and recieve money for the meal. The money for serving children’s meals pays for the lunchroom workers salaries and the food served. This is going to happen more often as the food taste declines in order to get it more healthy and kids want to bring their own lunch. At some point the schools will attempt to not allow students to bring any food to school in order to assure their lunch room remains self sufficent.
Milk isn’t even good for you, not these days with all the hormones and steroids and antibiotics. This is all just lobbying from the food companies. Shove this factory manufactured cardboard play food in your child’s mouth so we get you dollar, or if not yours then the state’s. Ridiculous. If the school really cared about nutrition then they’d offer whole vegetables, not some sodium laden, msg filled, nutrient drained, “vegetable” soup. Don’t even get me started on the chicken (goo) nuggets. Disgusting. The worst offender of children’s nutrition (besides fast food chains) is the school system. They should clean up their act before they start attacking struggling mothers.

The government has all the necessary resources to intimidate little children but can’t seem to monitor our borders for drug trafficing? Pure tyranny. Wake up America.
Lots of outrage but how come, except for possible allergies, nobody mentions any of the really serious reasons these actions are outrageous? Why isn’t anybody outraged over the unreasonable search and seizure the children of subjected to? This is something supposed protected by the Constitution, but seems to be flouted by the food inspectors.
And as soemone alluded to but didn’t say, many religions have restrictions on what they are allowed to eat. Jewish people are required to eat only Kosher food, Muslim people are required to eat only certain foods and foods prepared in specified ways, etc. What happened to their freedom of religion?
Are they checking each child’s records for food allergies? This would really tick me off. The food guideline only say how much of each group we should eat each day, not at each meal, and they are guidelines, not mandates.
Who is making money on this deal?
I can hardly believe that there is such a lack of wisdom in the government…I am also disgusted that this lack of wisdom is carried out by this inspector, this is when our right to bear arms becomes so obviously important. this inspector should lose his job…in fact the job should not exist! this is a perfect example of A) the government being too big. We all grew up and ate from the cafeteria food and those that would eat Tasty- Cakes did and those that at their veggies did. There were no “Food Police” The kids who come to school with a Pop-tart, they need some help with nutrition but not by being forced. It would be so much better with a government that keeps out of our personal lives.
Who’s the idiot that still sends their kids to public school? Everyone knows that public school increases the odds of societal failure, prescription drug abuse (i.e. ADDHD drugs) and a sense of how to be a good government slave. This story is just par for the course in taking away the rights of parents (i.e. check out parens patriae and the missing kids in foster care under child protective services in any state). Anyone that loves their kid today wouldn’t dream of sending their kids to public school.

As a parent of 6 children, homeschooling them has been the best and most peaceful thing that my wife and I have ever done, we know exactly what our children are eating and what they may and may not have. I would rather die a horrible death than to place my children in a government “controlled” public school. So much for the “public” part of the government “Sacred” school system. Parents are not a part of their children’s lives. Parents are hosts for the parasites called children.

Amazing…….who would have ever believed that something like this would happen in the United States! Oh, my bad….I meant why are you so surprised? Don’t you remember that it takes a village to raise a child (wasn’t this H. Clinton’s 1st Lady Theme)? Things like this will happen more and more as Americans choose (by choice of candidates or by complacency) to become sheep led to slaughter. And now for another “I can’t believe this story”…….Mr. L Croft, your post states, “no wonder people get riled to the point of physical violence”. Better be careful. Just recently, I know of a young woman (YW) who made a similar remark at work. Hers was, “no wonder people go postal”. The generalized remark was made on a Friday in a private conversation with her supervisor. It was apparently over heard by some co-workers. On Monday morning, a co-worker (who wasn’t even at work when the comment was made) called the police and said she THOUGHT the YW might be an active shooter (active shooter is a code word for violence in the workplace). Within minutes of the call, four patrol cars responded and surrounded the workplace. The YW was arrested in front of her peers, handcuffed and searched in the parking lot, and taken to the police station where she was cuffed to a bench while they investigated the complaint. About 4 hours later she was released since the charges were determined to be “unfounded”. The YW has since inquired about lawful recourses she might have against the caller for false arrest and public humiliation but at all avenues has been told there is nothing she can do. So, be warned that we now also live in a society where anyone can call the cops and say they THINK you might be a dangerous person and you can be arrested and there will be no lawful recourse against the caller if the allegations are later determined to be unfounded. Kind of scary….just like this story about the little girl’s lunch.
I cannot believe what I’ve read. Since when have taxpayers started paying for a lunch inspector. I don’t care what the parents send as a lunch for their children. It’s their children and their business. No school, government, or other outside entity has the right to take over the parenting of our children. Parents it’s time to wake up and be involved. We’ve let everyone under the sun parent our children while we’ve been content to sit and watch. Some great parents have taken a stand and are home schooling. Wonder WHY!!! We now have a husband and wife team telling us how to spend our money and what to feed our kids and they are such excellent examples. A wife who dares to tell us what to eat while she is such a physical example of good eating habits. We’ve let this same government take God out of our schools, public office and next they’ll be confiscating our Bibles along with our 2nd Amendment rights. Little steps people . . . Well.. The police state is alive and well. My daughter is in kindergarten in nc, and I eat lunch with her several times a week. When they do offer vegetables to the kids, maybe 1 percent have ever taken them. Just like when we were kids, children want the stuff that tastes good. I am not saying that kids shouldn’t eat vegetables, but this is not the right way of going about it. Next the states will be putting kids in jail for not eating certain foods, or not taking vaccines. They arrested a kid for running at recess just recently. The banks and large corporations have hijacked this country and it is high time we take it back before they sign a contract to have 30,000 predator drones in USA airspace. Oh, wait, that just happened as well.

The fact that there are “inspectors” wandering around scaring four year olds by digging through their lunch is scary enough. And I wish people would stop analyzing what this mother gave her to eat. There is nothing wrong with the lunch, but if this kid had brought a pack of Ho Ho’s and a soda it isn’t the government’s business to butt in.

When are people going to wake up to the disaster of liberalism? As a 20 year public school veteran and a conservative I am appalled!!! Parents do not have to give up their children to the “state”. Parents pack a lunch and try to eat with your child at least once a week or month. Speak up in school and at school board meetings and your voices will be heard. Attend PTA meetings and complain. The squeaky wheel will get attention. Do so politely but firmly. Your taxes pay for these “services”. Use your power at the poles and vote the people out with these ridiculous “inspectors”.

I advise parents to home school if they can.
Perhaps send them to HS if they want to take things like Chemistry & such & the parent doesn’t feel competent to lead the child in those particular subjects.
But these days, there are a lot of resources.
And if you can do it, I wholly recommend home schooling whenever possible.

Coming down the pike soon the government will want to convert schools to 24 hours per day, but, they will allow visitation on Sundays, no you won’t be able to take them to church and visitations will be supervised by the state.

This is standard practice in all public pre-K programs. At least that mother is allowed to send her kid with food from home, when my youngest son was in preK he had to eat what they gave him no matter what …. which is almost nothing since he has severe food sensory issues. He just didn’t eat lunch at all that whole year and ate when he got home at 1. :( It’s ridiculous whats going on.

I worked for 6 years in the public school system, my wife did so for 25.
The likely result for a 4 year old is going to be to make her afraid to go to school, or to make her afraid to take her lunch to school.

What I don’t understand is why they gave the child an entire lunch when they said that the child needed some vegetables. Why not just give the child the vegetables.
My child also prefers fruit to vegetables, so I give her a variety of fresh fruit instead.
and chicken nuggets are POISON. I would sue the school that gave those to my child. And yes, I am a from scratch cook who buys lots of fresh produce. Most meals here are vegetarian because of all the antibiotics that they inject in animals.

I have three kids and they all have a variety of food allergies: peanuts, all legumes, eggs, fish- we also read and educate ourselves about food and know very well that school lunches are a horrible source of nutrition. Pizza counts as a vegetable?!?!?? My oldest is on medication for ADHD that makes him not want to eat- His developmental pediatrician said her son is on the same meds and that she just quit sending a lunch all together because her sons watched it every day. She is an educated woman making a solid choice for her individual child, we all are. Its cheaper to buy lunches than to send them- we qualify for reduced lunches and still don’t have him buy at school. This government inspector could have just added/offered a vegetable and sent a note home- the behavior was overboard. I wish they explained if this fool took the time to address individual issues like allergies/meds before forcing the kids to eat crap nuggets.

Not only is the state trampling on parental rights (and yes, judges have inaccurately interpreted the Constitution to pave the way for this), they’re requiring that the children be provided with food that lacks nutritional value, and in fact can be harmful. Chicken nuggets are processed garbage. Milk is not the necessary food group we’ve all been led to believe, and untold numbers of children cannot tolerate it. The warmed over veggies in any school cafeteria have had all their nutrients cooked out of them. Although the very premise of the school taking this action is disturbing enough, it’s doubly so when you realize the processed junk they erroneously label “nutritious.”
There is a solution– Home School.
So far, Big Nanny does not have the authority to enter your home and render a verdict on your kid’s lunch.
But, some of you are not able to home school. I must say, I know many Moms who quit their job at the magic career and went home to the original Mom’s career, Home Maker. But…………
If you want to beat the system, give your kid a baggie of carrots in the lunch box. Then, give them an empty bag hidden under the sandwich. Tell them to leave the carrots in the lunch box in case the lunch police, or nanny teacher, check their lunch.
When the prison keepers are not looking, and no kids can see, slip the carrots into their pocket, leaving the empty bag obvious.
Another option is to comply, but the stealth method will teach your kid some important survival skills.
If your kid actually gags at vegetables, they could eat them, puke, and that should take care of it. Be sure you give them the veggies that are the most potent for the maneuver. The school nurse, or your family doctor, could be enlisted to help.
As willing as I am to agree, that liberal thinking and policies are the foundation of this lunacy, I think we would be hard pressed to prove that this one instance can be laid at Obama’s door. IF however, this is a widespread phenomenon, and school systems are actually wasting tax payer’s money hiring lunch bag inspectors, then we can cheer these idiots on toward digging their own political grave (I started to say ‘graves’ to make this sentence grammatically correct, but I think it would be more poetically just that they be digging a ‘mass grave’!) On a side note, in the mean time I would be happy to make up a batch of non-spoiling fake vegetables (for a price), that your kid can carry for deception purposes. This is just CRAZY! There are food allergies that are so bad they can kill ou. Peanuts, eggs, wheat, strawberries, etc. The children should eat what the parents tell them to eat. My oldest was allergic to eggs. My daughter was allergic to cow’s milk. Youngest was allergic to bananas. My mom is allergic to oranges. I spent 6 hours in Emergency Room with my oldest son due to an allergic reaction, then two hours in observation room. Ever heard of anaphylactic shock? It kills. I am extremely allergic to red wasp stings, but lucky for me, I am not a student in North Carolina and they aren’t froceing me to eat those. And if you have diabetes you can’t eat high carb foods. Is the N.C. “expert” aware of eveything she or he needs to know about allergies and diabetes, and kisd can get ulcers, too. They are on special diets that their moms prepare for them in the morning before school. I say SUE that school.

Well since I am an Independent and not a republican let me clarify a few things short minded people don’t realize. This organization was founded in late 1980 (Reagan’s administration). It was revised two times to include nutrition programs in 1984 and in 1986,(also Reagan’s), and again in 1994,(Clinton’s). It was added to the No Child left behind program in 2001 as an assessment tool for schools,(Bush’s administration). It was revised once again in 2007 to its current standard,(Bush’s). I love how people will use any reason to demonize the other party. Pull your heads out of your butts and realize that this is just a smoke screen once again just like all the other non-issues. Democrats and Republicans are part of the same breed, out to find ways to get our money and stay rich, period. To call this socialism is to not know the real definition of socialism. And what part of the chicken is the NUGGET? I bit into a chicken nugget at McDonalds once and it wasn’t white meat inside. It hink at Chic Filet it is really white meat chicken, but I don’t eat those often either. I try to avoid fried foods. My oldest son took his lunch every day because all they served at his school cafeteria was Fried and he was smart enough to know that is Not Good For you.
The most popular lunch was when my kids were in 5th grade and on Fridays they could get a salad, like a Chef Salad. They LOVED that.
When my kids got home from school I would have a bowl of either fruits or veggies or both washed and sliced and ready for snacks. I didn’t buy chips and cokes for home. They loved a bowl of carrots, strawberries, melon, etc. Whatever was in seaon and fresh.

Kids are obese these days because parents feed them JuNk like potato chips(NOT considered a veggie!) try carrots and ranch (Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning tastes just like it but doesn’t have the fat). Someone needs to step in before everyone is morbidly obese from the point of early childhood.
When I started homeschooling, I was excited to think that I could learn about the subjects that interest me most, Marine Biology, a higher Math curriculum then in public school, and more hands-on science and history projects! I didn’t even think about not eating the disgusting school lunches anymore.

How does everybody read this article and come to the conclusion that this an Obama effort to remove our freedoms?
First, Hoke County is in North Carolina, a state that has been dominated by Republican politics for nearly forever. Whatever inspection is happening, whether it is limited to this specific school, this specific county, or North Carolina in general, was in all likelihood set by republican politicians or republican appointed administrators.
The statement “… sent a statement to state Rep. G.L. Pridgen (R-Robeson) detailing her complaint. Pridgen says he was shocked to hear it. Pridgen has since learned this is a nationwide practice based on federal guidelines.” may be true, but G.L. Pridgen’s knowledge or sources are false, or Pridgen is a liar or a republican manipulator. There is NO federal guideline to inspect student’s lunches. There never has been. NOBODY in the federal bureaucracy has certainly proposed such an inspection requirement, and certainly NOBODY in the Obama administration has proposed such a thing. One can only assume that Pridgen is a republican manipulator/liar trying to use this issue (caused by stupid republican policies) and shift the blame on somebody else in a clearly misleading manner for political gain. It is sickening that our politics have devolved to lies and misrepresentation. And the press is just as much to blame. Matt Willoughby is happy to document what Pridgen has apparently learned, but did he bother to check for himself to find out if it is really true? If not, he is an incompetent reporter. If he did, and found that there really is no such federal policy or guideline, did he simply omit writing this to participate himself in the lie and manipulation? Matt Willoughby clearly is either incompetent or a liar.
People, use your common sense. Most of us have kids in school. Has your kid ever had his lunch inspected? If this was a nationwide program, don’t you think we all would have experienced a similar event ourselves by now? Don’t be so gullible. Wow since when did it become legal for someone to search a child (or their lunch) without a parent present. I don’t care what they are trying to do for the benefit of their school or what grade they are getting from the State for the nutrition levels. That is just wrong. Stay out of our children’s lives unless there is abuse or neglect. I’m sorry but not sending milk (that will get warm and gross) or a vegetable in our children’s lunch doesn’t constitute abuse or neglect.
And if they want to monitor what the “Daycare” is feeding those children who get free/reduced lunch then monitor the daycare not the children who bring a bag lunch. And if a child brings a bag of doritos or a twinkie for lunch then you might have a case of neglect otherwise they should mind their own business.
If the family is too dumb to raise a child to eat proper they shouldn’t have been allowed to bear children in the first place. Forcing them to eat right should be just the first step in reforming our society into accepting the fact that a great deal of the population isn’t capable of producing valuable offspring.

We do need to educate parents on better nutrition for children. I think lots of children don’t eat vegetables because they are not offered at home, so the concept is to offer things they may have never eaten. By 4, some children have been eating so much junk food they will eat nothing else. It’s hard work to break that habit. I don’t agree with offering the whole lunch, but milk and veggies, yes. You’d be surprised how much food is thrown away each day at school. It’s sad. And expensive.
This is about stealing your children, a piece at a time. About 20% of the school day is spent on socialism in the form of teaching them to support all types of ‘state approved’ projects, from charities, to equal opportunity, to ‘help everybody’ to what you put in your lunchbox. No wonder kids are failing reading, writing, and arithmetic at ever increasing rates.
Then, to demonstrate ‘how much the teachers are doing to improve education’ they fill up a backpack full of homework assignments (that the teachers should have accomplished during the day) to be accomplished by the overtaxed and overworked parents for the evening. 3 and 4 hours of stuff that should have been done during the day is not unusual.
It is time to take back your kids. Take back your schools. You are paying for this crappy ‘education’ that amounts to more programming in communist idealogy than reading, writing, arithmetic, science, etc.
Nothing surprises me anymore. I remember letting my kids pack their OWN lunches in elementary school (within reason) because I figured then at least they would eat it. They both packed decent sandwiches, usually fruit, maybe a snack item, and bought milk at school. I also saved the less palatable items for dinnertime when they could be supervised by their parents. Neither ate many veggies as young kids — I ate carrot and celery sticks at lunch and cooked veggies at dinner, but that’s it. Funny how both my kids now have kids of their own and my grandkids don’t like veggies either — go figure!! But my kids somehow grew up just fine and know how to feed my grandsons just fine too. What if your child is allergic to milk? What if you decide you only feed your child organic but the milk provided y the schools come from cows injected with bovine growth hormone(BGH)? I’ve read a milk lable in California recently and the ingredients weren’t just milk, it included ‘milk products’. Milk Products are most often from China (remeber the melamine scare?).

Get shelf stable soy or rice or coconut milk boxes. They have a LONG shelf life un-opened, so you can keep putting the same one in the lunch bag – with the applejuice. That will end the milk thing (and those are all better for your daughter than the applejuice. – you might find she likes them!) I have worked in the public schools as an aid, especially during the lunch times. Most of the kids that purchase public school lunches eat 2-3 bites of food and eat the dessert and through everything else away. Even if there is a fruit and vegetable on the tray, it gets thrown away. It doesn’t matter who implemented the program, we as parents and citizens have to stand up for our rights. We are becoming a socialist nation and we need to make a stand now.
and what about kids with DIETARY RESRICTIONS??!!! My children are gluten/diary free due to allergies. If someone gives my kid a carton of milk – they’ll break out in hives and most likely puke for hours uncontrollably.

This is precisely why my peanut allergic child goes to private school. Our public schools here in Wake County, NC serve peanut butter and jelly. What would happen if my son was forced to eat anything from the same cafeteria that makes peanut butter and jelly? You guessed it, probably a fatal anaphylactic reaction. And, he would not be allowed to have his medicine nearby, as it would be locked at the other end of the school in the office. It’s a scary thought. I know this is real because it happened to a friend’s daughter in Greensboro. Her child was forced to eat pizza and throw away her egg sandwich, cheese, fruit and yogurt. Really?
@Claire, This is happening in North Carolina. It happened to a friend’s child in Greensboro. And she was asked to pay for the lunch. The child was a kindergartner. Regardless of WRAL says in the other situation, this is very real, very invasive, and terrifying to those of us who have children with allergies. This reinforces my decision to send my child to private school, which I would spend every last dime to continue to provide.

The only thing that the government cares about more than confiscating every penny of our money is the complete hegemonic domination of every aspect of our lives. What an awesome display of ignorance. It was not the government doing this and Obama didn’t have anything to do with it. The girl was given a supplement and could keep her lunch. The school was involved in a research project checking if kids were getting good nutrition. In an overabundance of caution, and to keep high scores, they gave her a school lunch in addition to her lunch and she wasn’t charged for it. I am more concerned about the mother teaching her child not to eat vegetables, which she still didn’t eat. Blame an overzealous school wanting to get a high score of kids getting good lunches for actually giving an additional lunch to a child and blame a confused mother blaming a school for providing her child with the opportunity to eat vegetables.
According to an article this morning by the Fayetteville Observer, the 4 year old misunderstood and thought she had to get a new lunch rather than just the additional serving of fruits or vegetables. My 4 year old probably would have been just as confused. I would have been in the same boat, too – my daughter eats like a bird and I wouldn’t have packed two servings of fruits or vegetables just to waste one. But I also wouldn’t have blown this so out of proportion as to call the school a Totalitarian regime like China.

Last week I wanted to have lunch with my son, so I went to Subway and bought 2 ham sandwiches, baked lays, and milk and went to the school at lunch time. They would not let me in the cafeteria. They said that it was illegal (federally) to bring “fast food” into the cafeteria, but if I wanted to go home and make him a hamburger and fries, I could bring that. Seriously, it was a FREAKING sandwich people. What has our world come to where the government tells me what I can feed my child! And what were they having for lunch that day: PIZZA. I think we also need to look at this issue from the perspective of the neglected children. There are a frightening number of children in the country who don’t get enough to eat. Sometimes its because the parents can’t afford it, but more often it is because of abuse or neglect. By searching the sack lunches there is a bigger picture afforded of the level of care the child is receiving at home. Granted, this specific case is not what I’m talking about. This is obviously a child who receives plenty of nutrition. I’m talking about the other sack lunches that have no drink and no real food. It’s basically a bag of junk food. Don’t you agree that a child like this would be better off being provided a meal from the school?

I realize that there’s no use in mentioning this, since the comments thread is populated by people who have been brainwashed by Fox News, but the details in this story are factually incorrect. No one deprived the little girl of her homemade lunch, nobody forced her to eat chicken nuggets, and the mother was not and would not have been charged for extra food. This has nothing to do with freedoms being taken away, there is no communism involved, and the president isn’t responsible for everything bad that has ever happened throughout history. The little girl came to school a few days ago without any milk, so someone told her to go through the lunch line and get some. (It was free.) But she got confused and thought she had to get a whole new lunch. When she told her mother about this, the mother decided that school bureaucrats were forcing her child to eat their lunch instead of the one she packed for her daughter. The whole thing is ridiculous, and it demonstrates that when people have made up their mind to be mad, they don’t really need a reason.
I would dare them to take food from my prek child or even give her extra! My daughter is a type 1 diabetic and under doctor orders for carb restrictions. This is scary there are some many health conditions and allergies that children have.
First they came for the banks, forcing them to loan to those who would not pay them back and I did nothing since I wasn’t a bank. Then they came for the Catholic church’s charitable organizations, forcing them or their insurance companies to provide anti-religious services and I did nothing since I wasn’t Catholic. Then they came for General Motors and Chrysler to “save” them from competition and I did nothing because I owned no stock in them or their competitors. Then they came for my pre-schooler’s lunch and now I am in prison because I went ballistic.

The solution to this problem is fairly simply in thought anyway – all rational, logical and clear thinking parents need to pull their children out of public school yesterday. If parents banded together across the nation and said a ‘big screw you!’ to the federal government you don’t us or our children, the funding would all be taken away and their power. As someone else pointed out, cheese is dairy and thus is same type of food as milk with same food value. So it would appear that the people who wrote the guidelines and the people paid to enforce the guidlines have never taken a nutrition course and in fact don’t know anything about nutrition. This is the same government that wants to be in charge of our health care, that in fact has taken over health care and a good example of why we need to get the government out of our lives.

For children of poverty, there are indeed government subsidized school lunches and in many cases government subsidized school breakfasts as well so that if the family is poor there is no problem for the child to access food at school. For parents who do provide a bag lunch for their children, I would assume that the parents can make a better decision than government inspectors concerning what food their child should be eating. Considering the fact that the government inspector in question did not know that cheese is in fact a milk product, made from milk, that does include the same protein and calcium content as milk (because it is made from milk), I think my assumption is very reasonable.
Nonetheless, where is it in the Constitution that government inspectors get to tell my kid what to eat?

Federal programs are in all school, if the school get Federal money then they have a say so and it will have rules to follow or lose the Federal money. There was no federal/state agent; it was a researcher from a child development program at UNC Chapel Hill who was generally assessing the school and has no authority to “order” any child to do anything. They need to assess these daycares for licensing reasons and to see how the subsidies are being used.
No one told or made the girl get a new lunch. She was told to go and get a milk/vegetable, if she wanted them, but the girl was apparently confused and thought she was supposed to get a whole new lunch. She is only four years old. The mother has been mistaken about the possibility of her getting charged for these supplements and that is why she requests that the school doesn’t give her child milk and vegetables. A lot of children attend this public daycare by being fully government subsidized, their parents apply for the program and if their child is deemed “at risk” (either disabled or low-income) they attend for free, and are made aware that the schools will supplement the children’s lunches of any missing food groups, if the child wants to eat the food. The free supplements are offered precisely because the school worries about parents not being able to afford healthy foods. The government is not employing full-time lunchbox watchmen.
My children and I are gluten, yeast, and lactose intolerant. We also must severely limit the amount of sugar in our diets. Is the school system really ready to provide the dietary needs of ALL it’s students and are they ready to be HELD ACCOUNTABLE when they force a child to eat something they may be intolerant/allergic to? Instead of worrying about how nutritious a student’s home packed lunch is they should be re-thinking their own overly processed, sugar packed, and unhealthy student meals! OH I forgot! They are on a budget :)
I am guessing that there are a lot of low income children in this school and some recently impoverished families and the schools are trying to prevent the children from being embarrassed so they give a lot of children free food so it does not look like the poorer ones are being singled out. If little Johnny as little food in his lunchbox and little Sally is only missing one item. If they give them both a meal it does not single out the poor children.
the principle of of my two sons school paddled my son for doing something wrong,and sent a letter home telling me to disapline him.I called him to let him know that i would not give him any more disapline due to the fact that he already did my job,no double jepardy.The next day he called both my boys in and spanked them.I went to the school and tried to confront him,he locked his door and would not come out.I recieved a letter to show up at a school board meeting,I did.At the meeting every official was there including the police.There was a lot said but what stuck with me for years was what the principal said,when you sign your children up to public school you give up your rights to them and they could do anything they wanted to do to them.I was inlightened least to say.I new then that I was living in a communist country.lennin was right,he would take over this country without firing a bullet.

If the family has the money to provide a lunch then the child should most likely not be in Pre-K because guidelines for Pre-K and Free Lunch-Free Breakfast are below the poverty line.

A school lunch isn’t designed as a model lunch for everyone or anyone. It’s designed to provide a third of the daily nutritional needs of a generalized target population. Individuals within the polulation may have greater or less needs, and the variance may be significant. A regulation compliant school meal may be a formula for obesity for some and a formula for malnutrition for others. Holding it up as an ideal model for all students is like insisting that every student should wear a size 4 shoe.
USDA guidelines are also based on daily consumption, not necessarily every meal. So the relative healthiness of an individual meal is determined in part on what else is consumed that day. If the school had no idea what the child had for breakfast or what the parents intended to feed the kid for snacks and supper it made a mistake in trying to force extra food on the child.
This begs the question: How much does kind of government nonsense contributed to childhood obesity? The disadvantaged part of America sees WIC payments stacked on top of food stamps on top of free school lunches. That’s enough food all together to turn Michael Moore into a blimp.

I guess if the schools/government would like to take over the lunches children bring – great but then they can pay for the clothes they wear and all of the things it takes to raise a child since we are inept at the job. Lets focus on the quality of teachers and those who are watching these precious children. I am sure the chicken nuggets were FRIED and were probably processed meat also. The turkey sandwich was better for her than that. The government schools remove PE and recess from the schools, that is why obesity is a problem. If kids play and exercise the weight is not as likely to be an issue.

slightly off topic, but I find this comparison a bit amusing. In China the pre-k and kindergarten kids go home with their grandparents for lunch and the older kids (around 9 and up) buy noodles or small dishes of food at little restaurants and street food carts since their schools are locked up through the mid day break.

Just heard about Big Bro Hussian’s communist plot to bag search kids’ lunch. Who are they to tell us what to eat? When I was in school, I had eggs, sausage patties, juice, grits, and biscuits for breakfast. I took a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, and some Kool-Aid for dinner. But, we had our vegetables at suppertime, green beans, mustard greens, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, green onions, radishes, lettuce, or a few others I probably don’t remember. I grew up fine without any government oversight, weighed properly because I played outside all day long, practiced running, chin-ups, long and high jumping, etc for the county fair day to compete in physical races.
Nevertheless, government was where it belonged, it provided the school building and equipment, the paddle that was used on those creating problems, and stayed out of our personal lives. I’d love to see some prominent lawyer take this on pro-bono to keep this mad administration out of our daily lives.
Maybe we should use the old paddle on this inspector, principal, and school board that follows an immoral, indecent, misguided, unconstitutional administration.

I live in NC. The “state inspectors” are from a Republican Congress . . . not Democrats. FYI. A lot of the Republican legislators are looking for any reason to shut down or cripple education. There’s a bill coming up that will essentially cut this pre-K program from the state all-together and make parents of every socio-economic level pay for pre-K education. Many families in our state will be unable to pay, putting further financial burdon on already strapped families in one of the worst economic times in our lives.
Don’t criticize things you know nothing about. Don’t lump people into one party over or under another. This is not about Democrats and Republicans. This is about ignorance and compassion. As a public school teacher, mother of two in pre-school(which I pay for), and registered voter in the state where this happened, I feel I can make a more educated comment than most. It matters not whether this is a state funded program or federally funded. Children of this age are often picky eaters. Force feeding them is not the answer unless of course they are not eating anything. Children can be introduced to foods. Sometimes they will learn to like them. They should be offered a variety of foods. Parents have been raising healthy children for years, somehow without the assistance of the state or government coming in to inspect what foods are in the refrigerator. One more reason not to send your child to public school. Our Constitution has been stomped on. Our childrens health is the concern of the entire nation. We have an epidemic of obesity in our nation that should scare us the way cancer, AIDS and smallpox did in the past. Stopping this becomes the responsibility of the parents to ensure that the right foods are being fed to our children. This education starts at birth. The foods we feed our kids when they are babies follow them the rest of our lives. We as a nation are grossly undereducated about nutrition and health in general. What the inspector did should have been handled differently but it does not dismiss the epidemic we have going on in our nation. The government needs to stop allowing big business to process and refine all of our food with addictive sugary additives that make our kids not want to eat healthy foods.

And the fact that you acknowledged that you didn’t know how to spell but clearly didn’t care enough to take the time to correct your mistakes just makes you look lazy or like a crazy person who belongs in a padded room because they can’t control their irrational anger long enough to take the time to hit spell check or pay attention to the red squiggly lines that appear under misspelled words. As for the rest of you who keep saying that private schools and homeschooling is the best thing for our kids nowadays to get them away from government influence, you need to look at all the facts a bit more. Public schools may have government funding and interference, but private schools don’t even require their teachers to have certifications or specific degrees in order to teach in their subject areas. Public schools do require this, so if you send your kids to a public school, at least you know the teachers there have the education and certification to teach. Also, private schools are much more expensive, so would you rather spend thousands of dollars sending your kids to a much more expensive school where the teachers don’t have to have a certain education or certification, or would you rather spend the extra $1 per lunch to send some veggies in your kids lunch?
And as for homeschooling, not everyone has the luxury of being able to quit their jobs to stay home with their kids to teach them. Also, how many parents out there do you actually think have the capability or are qualified enough to teach their kids? Yeah, I’d say most parents have the ability to teach their kids up through most of elementary school, but once a kid hits middle school or high school age, a lot of parents probably have no idea how to teach biology, algebra, chemistry, or any other higher level class. I had cousins that were homeschooled exclusively all the way through high school, and the way they learned once they reached the age where their mother no longer was qualified to teach them was basically reading everything from the book and learning by themselves. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but once they got into college (which by the way, they were not able to go to any state universities because, as homeschoolers, they had no GPA, class rank, or anything that a lot of schools look at for admission, and then they had to go to private colleges that cost thousands of dollars more than state colleges. Another disadvantage of homeschooling your children.), they had trouble adjusting to the way classes were taught because they were so used to just reading everything out of the books. They were failing their easy general education classes because they didn’t understand the concept of going to class and learning from lectures.
I understand that the issue brought up in this article focuses on how our government was basically trying to force-feed a school lunch to a four-year-old and how we shouldn’t need our government to tell us what and what not to eat, and I agree that our government has gone too far with this, but I just needed to educate some of the idiots out there in the world that public schools are not terrible just because they have government funding. So, before any of you rashly comment on how everyone should just remove their kids from public schools and start homeschooling them or put them in private schools, why don’t you actually look at all of the facts and really look at whether it’s actually doable for most people. Otherwise, you’ve probably just made a stupid, rash comment because you’re probably just angry that someone was trying to make sure your kids have a decent, nutritious lunch and just overstepped their boundaries. If you really think about it, you’ll find that this particular issue, albeit disturbing, is still very small on the grand scale of what else is going wrong in our country right now and everyone just seems to be blowing it way out of proportion.

Speaking as someone who has seen, with her own eyes, a mother give her 2 year a bottle of Pepsi to suck on when the child refused the formula bottle, I think that maybe the government isn’t doing enough to make sure that children are being fed properly.
No one stepped in to say, “Don’t give your infant Pepsi!”, but honestly, they should have.
I find every comment on here laughable and frightening in their sheer stupidity. The government is stripping us of our freedoms?? How, by trying to take care of children when their own parents won’t? Anyway, to the point: Perhaps if you had actually read and understood the first paragraph of my previous comment, you would have realized that you just made yourself look like a fool. If correcting people on their grammar makes me a jackass, then so be it. I’m a jackass. However, I was just trying to help a guy out by telling him how to make his points and comments be better understood by educated individuals. However, I see our stellar education system (can you detect sarcasm?) has been completely lost on you considering you still didn’t get the point of using proper grammar and correct spelling.
Also, I was just trying to point out that homeschooling and private schools are not the answer to all our problems. See previous comment for reasons why.
I also conceded to the fact that the government went too far in this situation, and I don’t see why pointing out that people are making too big of a deal out of it requires people to swear at me.
Unfortunately, there will always be people like you that resort to cussing and calling people names because they are either too uneducated to come up with a decent, well-thought out response to reply like a civilized person, or they get ridiculously angry and lash out at people that have a differing opinion. My suggestion to you: get anger management. I won’t make the assumption that you are uneducated, even though your response definitely implies that, so I guess the only other option I have is that you have anger control issues.

so my son is in his 1st week of pre k in Ga. he is a healthy eater loves fruit veges some meats grains but it has to be prepared properly if it is a vege. my son is offered breakfast lunch and snack every day every day he say he wont eat till they get to the cookie snack at the end of the day…i asked about packing a lunch i was told NO. the govt has guide lines they have to follow and if he has issues then they wont make him eat….so i took that as them saying…eat what i gave you or starve….how is that right ?milk or water only …oh your thristy have some milk…no…fine dehydrate his typical lunch at home would be pb&j apples and carrots with yogurt and apple juice…..hmmmmhe would happily eat that! lunch at school today was a ham wrap probably salty over processed ham green beans probably from a can not fresh and peaches can as well i am sure…oh and here is your white milk which my child calls for baby bottles… i am about to explode
People get the facts straight. Ask around in various areas where you live. Is this happening everywhere. No I can vouch for that. No schools are doing that in Leeds Alabama where I reside. It has to be up to that school in that state. If it was an all government requirement don’t you think more people would be complaining that this was happening ALL over the country? By the way, even if your child is encouraged to eat a vegetable or fruit is it really that bad? It’s not like they’re encouraging drugs or something worse. And I let my children eat at school because I know they are getting a healthy well balanced meal. The other problem is these parents who send suckers for snacks? That’s not healthy at all and some parents are just to lazy be health conscious anyway. If you quit buying so much junk food and going to fast food restaurants then your child will learn to like some vegetables. They can’t force the food down their throats. Now that is when I would be upset. And the lady said she got a hot lunch to go with the sack lunch she brought and she also mentioned that she might have to pay for that lunch on her account not that she did pay for it. I just think there are more things to worry about than the government wanting your child to eat healthier. Plus the Obamas did not take God or prayer out of the schools. that was done a long time ago. And private schools has rules and regulations. How do you know if some don’t feel the same way about healthy lunches? Are we going to blame the government for that too? I think it could be up to individual schools. My goodness give the government a break. We all live in a free country. They are not shoving this food down they’re throats. Its just encouragement. Don’t we all need a little of that?
By the way, get the government apps or go to http://www.usa.gov and you can sign up to keep up with what is really going on inside the government. There are several issues you can pick from ( health issues, homeland security and several others). Quit listening to all the media and Internet. They either leave things out or don’t tell the truth sometimes. Get to the inside source then give a more educated opinion.
